What Is a Window Sticker?
A window sticker (also called a Monroney sticker, named after Oklahoma Senator Mike Monroney who sponsored the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958) is a label affixed to the window of a vehicle for sale. For new vehicles, federal law requires manufacturers to provide a Monroney sticker showing the MSRP, standard equipment, optional equipment, fuel economy, and safety ratings.
For used vehicles, there is no federal requirement for a Monroney-style sticker (the FTC Buyers Guide is the required form). However, most professional dealers create window stickers for their used inventory because they look professional, provide buyers with key information at a glance, and help vehicles sell faster. Tips for Effective Window Stickers
Price it clearly. The price should be the most prominent number on the sticker. Buyers walking your lot want to see the price without having to ask.
Highlight key features. List 6-10 of the most desirable features: backup camera, Bluetooth, leather seats, sunroof, navigation, heated seats. These are what differentiate your vehicle from similar ones on other lots.
Include your phone number. After-hours shoppers who see a vehicle they like should be able to call or text you directly from the sticker.
Keep the disclaimer brief. "As-is. Price excludes tax, title, and fees." is sufficient. Long legal disclaimers make the sticker look cluttered.
Use standard sticker sleeves. Print on 8.5" x 11" paper and use clear vinyl sticker holders that attach to the window with suction cups. These cost about $1 each and keep your stickers clean and professional.
